00s style in 2020

00s style in 2020

We all know that fashion is pretty circular, everyone loves to revisit trends of the past and put a modern twist on it, from 70s flares, to 50s skirts to 60s colourful patterns.  But who knew that the 00s would already be coming back around this soon?

Everywhere you look it’s pretty apparent that the 00s are back and there’s not much that can be done to stop the storm of Ugg boots and low-rise jeans coming towards you.

Here are some of our fave trends that we can bring into this decade without looking like a Disney star on the red carpet **cough Ashley Tisdale cough**

00a fashion Beyond Retro

Velour Tracksuits

The absolute height of both style and comfort. If your bum didn’t have Juicy written on it, who even where you?

We can thank Paris Hilton for helping merge the words of comfort style and glamour. The ultimate face of velour tracksuits. And you can thank brands like Vetements and Namilia for bringing us the modern versions.

If you want to update this style nowadays go for a pair of high waisted and wide tracksuit bottoms and a cropped velour hoodie and some chunky trainers.

00s fashion miniskirts Beyond Retro

Micro mini skirts

Has anyone ever said to you “That’s not a skirt! That’s a belt!”? Then you know how to properly rock these skirts. After all the saying is, good things come in small packages, so these skirts are clearly great.

How do you wear them you ask? With a vest top that is 3 sizes too small obviously. Add lots of belts, some knee high boots and a baker boy hat and you’ve got it nailed.

Tiny Bags

If you thought the skirts in the 00s were small, then you should check out the bags. The smaller the better and the more emblazoned with a designer logo the better.

While these bags were big enough to keep your phone and Lancome Juicy Tube Lip Gloss in, the bags these days seem to have gotten even smaller! Check out the cultish Jacquemus offerings where all you could fit are your loose change.

Tiny Bags 00s Fashion Beyond Retro

Dresses over jeans

This one is tenuous and the idea of it brings a lot of fear to people. But wearing a dress over jeans doesn’t have to look heinous! Bring the look to the present by wearing a mini dress that you would have previously thought was too short over a pair of boot cut trousers or plain jeans.

Cargo pants

Always forget where your phone or keys are? No problem! They’ll be in your pockets!

These trousers are the height of practicality, especially considering the usual size of the pockets on women's trousers. You can keep all your essentials close and handy or you can use it to keep multiple snacks or other fun things, as well as looking cool.

Handkerchief Hems

These hems don’t know what they’re doing, they go here there and everywhere! But they look so good billowing in the wind, making you seem like the ultimate main character.

00a Fashion Beyond Retro

Nice top and jeans

We miss the days when the go to response when asked ‘what are you wearing tonight’ was always a nice top and jeans. These had to be some sort of strappy halter top and low rise bootcut jeans though obviously.

Nowadays the going out top is still going strong but the way it’s worn has changed mainly to high rise jeans or the plethora of trouser cut options that there are. We love mixing the nice top and jeans idea with an elegant 80’s silk blouse and some leather trousers if you're not up for the bootcut jeans and strappy shrunken tops.

YEE-HAW! Giddy up and get ready for the most unexpected trend of the season - Western-inspired dressing. Everyone from Christina Aguilera to the internet’s new favourite child, Lil Nas X, has been known to rock a western-inspired look.

To get your inspiration flowing we take a look at the best western fashion moments, to help inform your sartorial choices. You don't have to go full chaps and spurs (although we do encourage it), with embroidered shirts, washed denim and a whole lot of suede. Ride on, cowboy.

Our Top Western Inspired Looks

1.Dolly Parton

Dolly Parton

Queen of country, queen of our hearts, Dolly Parton has more style in her pinky finger than most of us will do in our whole lives; but we can try. Her glitzy, wild-west style is very literally rhinestone cowgirl. Get the look with a white, leather midi skirt a fringed leather jacket, a glue gun and some diamantes.

2. Lady Gaga

We were all kind of shocked when it was announced that Gaga was dropping a country album but halfway into track one we were all slapping our knees and doing a do-si-do around the office. In summary, we’re here for it.

This laid-back country style is a super easy to recreate and might even be office-appropriate. A simple white shirt, knotted just on the hips paired with acid-wash jeans and your most cowboy-like boots; simple!

3. Kate Middleton

A look into Kate's casual side: the down-to-earth duchess paired the lacey Alice by Temperly top with classic dark denim.

Maybe the last person you would expect to be trying out a western style but of course she made it so chic! The crisp, white shirt has just the right amount of ruffles to tread a careful line between campy and cool, whilst the white stetson is the ultimate statement accessory. Check out our curation of dark blue denim to create this outfit.

4. Lil Nas X

lil-nas-x-old-town-road-download-mp3-for-free

If you’re under 30 then Lil Nas X has probably won quite a large chunk of your heart in the last couple of months. Since his record-breaking hit was released sixteen weeks ago it hasn’t left the top spot. With a plethora of vocals from Billy Ray Cyrus and the Walmart Yodel Kid being invited to jump on the track, there are now countless remixes doing the rounds and honestly we’re yet to find one we don’t love. Get Lil Nas X’s look by going for a modern twist on the classic look with double denim, a fringed denim jacket and a sleek black cowboy hat.

5. Cardi B

Cardi B

They call her Cardi Bardi, banging body, Spicy mami, hot tamale, but we call her our rodeo queen. Cardi rocked this bedazzled pink and blue cowboy look at her show in Houston and is now providing us with endless inspiration. Whilst this custom look might be inimitable we’re certainly desperate to try and get crafty and recreate it with a bit of DIY. If you need us we’ll be shopping for glue guns and glitter.

6. Michael J Fox in Back To The Future III

DON'T: Dress like Marty McFly. Remember how everyone laughed at him? Yeeeeaaahh...

This film is not amazing, but the outfits sure are. This 80s take on western style is something to behold, the classic cowboy look is taken to campy new levels with a pastel colour-palette and bold colour blocking that is so synonymous with the 80s. We love this surprisingly wearable look; find a pair of colourful vintage jeans, a jazzy western shirt and finish it off with your freshest pair of vintage sneakers. It’s a throwback wrapped in a throwback wrapped in an enigma.

Double Down On Denim - How To Wear The Double Denim Trend

Double Down On Denim - How To Wear The Double Denim Trend

Double denim, the Canadian tuxedo, whatever you want to call it - it’s a strong look. Often ridiculed, denim on denim a difficult trend to rock, but is actually a lot easier to pull off than you might think. The idea of wearing more than one piece of denim clothing might make you recoil in horror, and you recall that iconic photo of Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears.

However, lot has changed since then. If you’re feeling ready to experiment with your style, but don’t want to stray too far from your uniform of jeans, you don’t have to.

The double denim look has been around for years and undoubtedly will stick around, carefully treading the line between irony and tragedy, with brands such as MSGM, Bobby Abley, Off-White and Proenza Schouler sending denim-clad models down the runway at Fashion Week.

Still overwhelmed? Do not fear! Here is the Beyond Retro guide to styling denim on denim to help you make the most of all your favourite vintage denim pieces.

How To Wear Denim On Denim

1. Match your denim tones and add a print.

By matching denim tones your outfit will have a sleek, put together look - almost like a dressed down suit. (Chic, yet casj). Add a bold printed shirt or top to instantly lift it, then add accessories in the same tones to create a sleek palette for an even more impactful look.

2. Throw A Denim Jacket Over Your Denim Skirt.

In the summer, a vintage denim mini skirt is an instant go-to and one of the most versatile pieces in your wardrobe. This is a really easy way to get into the denim on denim trend as it combines two pieces you probably already have in your wardrobe and you can pair it with any kind of top you like - be adventurous with a vintage scarf halterneck or keep it classic with a graphic tee. Super cute.

3. Try A Mix 'n' Match.

If you struggle to find pieces in a similar tone then go in a different direction and look out for patchwork denim pieces. This is a fun way to style denim on denim and will give you an effortless but fashion-forward look. (Cardi B anyone?)

4. Stick To Black Denim.

Black or grey denim is a low-key way to make this trend work for everyone as it's subtle and chic. Wear with a pair of white Converse or trainers that will really pop.

5. Get Crafty and Do Some DIY.

There's nothing like finding a totally unique piece, and DIY-ing some denim is the perfect opportunity. Get your Youtube tutorials at the ready and go crazy. Turn jackets into crop tops, jeans into shorts or even just fray the edges of your denim to make them match.

6. Look For Coloured Denim.

Create a fun and summery look by keeping your eye out for pastel pieces of denim that you can wear together to create a sugary sweet look. Mix and match different colours of pastel denim if you're feeling adventurous or wear with a simple vest or shirt.

Five Ways To Wear Vintage Dungarees This Summer

Five Ways To Wear Vintage Dungarees This Summer

You might associate dungarees with awkward pictures of yourself as a baby that your mum pulls out to embarrass you, but they are actually a versatile piece you should definitely add to your adult wardrobe. In the summer, easy dressing and outfits you can throw on in a second are the best - especially as we have to make it out of the house and into the sunshine before until it disappears ten minutes later.

Sienna Miller in dungarees

After the boiler suit trend of winter, dungarees are the perfect summer alternative to keep comfy, cool and on trend. If you’ve seen your favourite people wearing them on the ‘gram you’re not the only one, they’re everywhere. But if you still feel lost about how to style a pair of vintage dungarees and then let us gently guide you.

Here's 5 Ways To Wear Vintage Dungarees For Summer:

1 - How to wear dungarees to work

Office-appropriate dressing gets even harder in the summer when all you want to do is rock up in shorts and crop top. Dungarees provide a great option between comfortable summer clothing and outfits that won’t get you fired. Try styling a dark blue or black dungaree dress with a white linen shirt with sleeves rolled up and pair it with some Birkenstocks or your favourite low-top trainers. You’ll stay cool and be comfortable but also look totally profesh.

2 - How to wear dungarees for a night out

On long, hot summer nights you want to be comfortable and feel your absolute best - that’s why dungarees are the answer! Underrated by many their versatility knows no bounds. Ideal for when those lazy park afternoons turn into long summer nights out - you don’t need an outfit change. A cami vest with dungarees and a pair of platforms is all you need to see you through. For a classic ‘out out’ vibe opt for black platforms and bag with gold jewellery with some statement earrings.

3 - How to wear dungarees on a date

Date outfit woes be gone! Pair a long pair of dungarees with a cute tee shirt, and matching leather accessories like a vintage camera bag and some mules for a relaxed and totally cute outfit. Whether you’re heading on a picnic, hitting up your favourite bar or strolling around a gallery this is the perfect date look. Now just to find a date…. Better start swiping.

4 - How to wear dungarees to a festival

Dungarees were MADE for festivals. Ideal for when you’re in a crowd, sitting on the grass and quick to get on and off when you’re in the dreaded festival portaloos, they’re the most practical piece you can invest in for the festival season. Practicality is SEXY. Go all out on your festival look with a sparkly bralet or mesh top, matching bumbag and some serious blingy sunglasses. Now you’re ready to go pay £10 for a pint of beer and dance to your heart’s content.

5 - How to wear dungarees to the beach

The perfect holiday outfit is just a pair of vintage dungarees away. If you’re not a beach dress kinda person then opt for the effortless and equally as cool option of some short dungarees. Wear over your swimsuit with a wide-brimmed hat and sandals for a chic beach look that will also take you from the beach to bar.

All the pieces featured in this blog can be found in our Brick Lane store on Cheshire Street, along with a myriad of other vintage gems.

You can shop our range of dungarees online here or alternatively pop into one of our stores to find your perfect pair and all the accessories you need.

What Was Denim Fashion Like in the 1970s?

What Was Denim Fashion Like in the 1970s?

The 1970s and denim go hand in hand together like Jimmy Hendrix and a guitar, or Bianca Jagger and a white horse at Studio 54. From flares and double denim to skirts long and short the decade shifted denim from a Counterculture statement to a fast fashion must have. We take a look at some of our favourite 1970s denim fashion moments to help you get the perfect look online and in store.

Flared Jeans

Flares in any shape and form are synonymous with the 70s, starting life off as Naval bell-bottoms bought by the youth as a distinctive sign of a Counterculture lifestyle. The demand for these recycled Navy uniform trousers outweighed supply and those who wanted the look started to get creative by cutting open the side seams of straight legged jeans and adding extra panels of contrasting fabric.

Manufactures and stores quickly caught on to the DIY flared jeans, and it wasn’t long before a flared jean could be seen in every High Street window. From Farrah Fawcett to the teenagers on the street, flared jeans were the staple of 1970s denim fashion.

The Wrangler Jacket

Denim jackets can be attached to many eras but for the 70s must have it was the Wrangler Blue Bell 11MJ. Made famous by John Lennon it is near impossible to find a photo of Lennon in the 70s without his favourite piece of Wrangler denim.

The Denim Skirt

The denim skirt was born in the 70s as a way to recycle damaged denim in the awakening of the environmentally conscious consumer. They came in all lengths from a take on the 60s mini to the longer bohemian cut with raw hems, centre front o-ring zips and the humble patchwork.

Double Denim

Originally the staple of Cowboys and Miners of Gold Rush California, double denim much like the flare became a popular 70s trend. One of the many advocates of the double denim look was Sonny and Cher. Sonny, in fact, was the first man on television to ever wear denim. Denim came to symbolise a fresh all – American sexuality so the more denimthe better!

With so many 70s pieces in store and online, it is so easy to recreate your own 1970s denim fashion moment or mix and match with your own style. Perhaps try your own bit of DIY on the unloved denim in the back of your wardrobe to create that patchwork look.   If we can recommend one thing though is to try double denim, it may change your life!

How To DIY Your Jeans

How To DIY Your Jeans

Everyone has a favourite pair of jeans, and the right ones will last you a lifetime. But sometimes you just want a change. We've got some simple DIY hacks to refresh your fave denim staples to give them an even longer life in your wardrobe.

How To Make A Raw Hem

Here’s a great trick for when your latest vintage jeans purchase is slightly too long or if you just want to show off your ankles this Summer, fixing your own hem is actually super simple!

Step 1

First off, you’ll need:

  • Your jeans
  • Fabric scissors
  • A tape measure
  • Pins

Step 2

Before this, try on your jeans in the mirror and work out exactly how high you’re going to crop them. Measure the ideal length on one leg, making sure to make note of the number for the other side.

Step 3

Using your trusty pins, attach both sides of the trouser together so that’s easier to trim. Be sure to make this a straight of a line as possible!

Step 4

Snip, snip! See ya later excess material. A straight line across should be simple enough. The sharper the scissors, the better. After snipping away the ends of your jeans, you can design your own worn effect using sandpaper. This will give you that very trendy raw hem result.

Frayed Hem Jeans

Instead of cutting horizontally across the pinned line, try snipping vertically upwards to create a fringing effect. Wash on a short cycle on the lowest temperature and they’ll naturally create a super cute fray.

Pocketless Denim

And here’s us thinking women's clothes didn’t have enough pockets. Often the colour underneath will be different from the rest of the jean, giving you a cute little statement zone.

Ripped Denim

A punk and grunge classic. We take no responsibility for any elders making stupid comments like ‘where are half your jeans gone?’ at family events though. It’s called fashion, look it up.

Find out more on making your denim your own with our guide on how to customize your denim!

How to Customise Your Denim

How to Customise Your Denim

Denim has been a staple in everyone’s wardrobes since the 60s! This classic workwear textile has been there with us throughout the fashion decades, resulting in the existence of a favourite pair of jeans, statement denim jacket or accessories such as hats or scrunchies (or if you’re brave - all of the above).

As seemingly everyone in the world is a lover of this comfortably cool material, the tried and tested best way to stand out from the crowd is through customisation. Here at Beyond Retro we love to show off a little creativity and rework a look, so here are a few helpful tips on how to transform your old denim from drab to fab.

Before playing around with your vintage denim, find out about it's story with our ultimate denim guide.

Customise Denim With Patches

Whether you’re into bands, cartoons or merely feel the need to make a statement; patches are one of the easiest ways to get custom images onto your clothes. They’re simple to apply, you just have to iron them on!

How to Acid Wash

To achieve this ultimate 90s effect, you’ll need to dilute some bleach in a spray bottle, squirting the areas you’d like to lighten. You’ll see the results almost immediately but remember to wash the jeans before you wear them!

How to do Embroidery

Maybe try practising on some scrap material first, or better yet, find somebody else to do it. All you need is a needle and embroidery thread and a cute design in mind and you're set to get to work customising your denim!

Inspired but have nothing to DIY yet? Discover some true vintage denim treasures online at Beyond Retro.
